LESSON 1- K
MATHEMATICS IN ZODIAC WHEEL
Let’s have some fun by knowing basic mathematics in zodiac wheel. The mathematics in circle always calculated in degrees. We know, the zodiac wheel is also a circle and the constellations, signs, houses and the planetary positions etc are shown in degrees.
Please refer Lesson 1 A, in which names of zodiac houses (signs) and constellations have been explained. Now let us put them in degrees in the zodiac wheel. This lesson can also be read along with Lesson 1 B. Sanskrit names are given in brackets.
1) Aeries (Mesha) – 0 to 30 degrees
2) Taurus (Vrishabha) – 30 to 60 degrees
3) Gemini (Mithuna) – 60 to 90 degrees
4) Cancer (Karkataka) – 90 to 120 degrees
5) Leo (Simha) – 120 to 150 degrees
6) Virgo (Kanya) – 150 to 180 degrees
7) Libra (Thula) – 180 to 210 degrees
8) Scorpio (Vrischika) – 210 to 240 degrees
9) Sagittarius (Dhanus) – 240 to 270 degrees
10) Capricorn (Makara) – 270 to 300 degrees
11) Aquarius (Kumbha) – 300 to 330 degrees
12) Pisces (Meena) – 330 to 360 degrees

Similarly we have 27 constellations and these constellations are adjusted in Zodiac wheel as follows.
1. Aswini – 0 to 13-20 (degrees and minutes)
2. Bharani – 13-20 to 26-40
3. Krittika – 26-40 to 40-00
4. Rohini – 40-00 to 53-20
5. Mrigasira – 53-20 to 66-40
6. Arudra – 66-40 to 80-00
7. Punarvasu – 80-00 to 93-20
8. Pushyami – 93-20 to 106-40
9. Aslesha – 106-40 to 120-00
10. Makha – 120-00 t0 133-20
11. Pubba – 133-20 to 146-40
12. Uttara – 146-40 to 160-00
13. Hastha – 160-00 to 173-20
14. Chitta – 173-20 to 186-40
15. Swathi – 186-40 to 200-00
16. Visakha – 200-00 to 213-20
17. Anuradha – 231-20 to 226-40
18. Jyeshta – 226-40 to 240-00
19. Moola – 240-00 to 253-20
20. Poorvashada – 253-20 to 266-40
21. Uttarashada – 266-40 to 280-00
22. Sravanam – 280-00 to 293-20
23. Dhanishta – 293-20 to 306-40
24. Satabhisham – 306-40 to 320-00
25. Poorvabhadra – 320-00 to 333-20
26. Uttarabhadra – 333-20 to 346-40
27. Revathi – 346-40 to 360-00
When the above constellations are placed in Zodiac, they appear as follows. Now let us see how these constellations are adjusted in zodiac signs. Each zodiac sign is spread over a span of 30 degrees and each constellation is spread over a span of 13 degrees 20 minutes (shown as 13-20). This classification is already discussed in Lesson 1-B, however to facilitate the learners in terms of degrees, the following is explained.
Aeries – Aswini 13-20, Bharani 13-20 and Krittika 3-20.
Taurus – Krittika 10-00, Rohini 13-20 and Mrigasira 6-40.
Gemini – Mrigasira 6-40, Arudra 13-20 and Punarvasu 10-00.
Cancer – Punarvasu 3-20, Pushyami 13-20 and Aslesha 13-20.
Leo – Makha 13-20, Pubba 13-20 and Uttara 3-20.
Virgo – Uttara 10-00, Hasta 13-20 and Chitta 6-40.
Libra – chitta 5-40, Swathi 13-20 and Visakha 10-00.
Scorpio – Visakha 3-20, Anuradha 13-20 and Jyeshta 13-20.
Sagittarius – Moola 13-20, Poorvashada 13-20 and Uttarashada 3-20.
Capricorn – Uttarashada 10-00, Sravanam 13-20 and Dhanishta 6-40.
Aquarius – Dhanishta 6-40, Satabhisham 13-20 and Poorvabhadra 10-00.
Pisces – Poorvabhadra 3-20, Uttarabhadra 13-20 and Revathi 13-20.

With the above classification, we can see similar patterns in the zodiac. The zodiac can be segmented in 3 parts. First part is from Aeries to Cancer, second is from Leo to Scorpio and third is from Sagittarius to Pisces. The constellations are also divided into three segments and first segment i.e. 9 constellations from Aswini to Aslesha are adjusted in first segment of signs i.e. Aeries to Cancer. The second segment of 9 constellations from Makha to Jyeshta are adjusted in second segment of signs i.e. Leo to Scorpio. The third segment of 9 constellations from Moola to Revathi are adjusted in third segment of signs i.e. Sagittarius to Pisces.
The navamsha (which is explained in Lesson 1 F) has been given greater importance in Vedic astrology.
Each zodiac sign is divided into 9 navamshas i.e. 3 degrees 20 minutes each. The Zodiac is divided into 108 navamshas. If the planet is positioned between 0 and 3-20 in Aeries, the planet should be recorded in Aeries (Mesha) Navamsha. From 3-20 to 6-40, it should be recorded in Taurus (Vrishabha) Navamsha and so on. In Taurus, first navamsha is Makara navamsha and so on.
