LESSON 1-O
SHADBALAM
Shad in the above term indicates six and balam indicates strength. Six types of strengths displayed by planets are described in astrological texts. This topic appears to be lengthy to amateur astrologers and practically even without going deep into this topic; predictions can be given by looking at other combinations. It does not mean that this topic is unimportant, but in the initial stage, out of six kinds of strengths, only one strength which is called digbalam (directional strength) can be considered by amateur astrologers, which would be easy to remember. At a later stage, other strengths of the planets can also be studied. So let’s have a look initially at digbalam or directional strength of the planets.
In this school of thought, (in any horoscope), ascendant is treated as in Eastern direction, 4th house in Northern direction, 7th house in Western direction and 10th house in Southern direction.
If so, Mercury and Jupiter get strength in the ascendant, (in any horoscope), Moon and Venus in 4th house, Saturn in 7th house, Sun and Mars in 10th house. In general, the planets positioned as above give good to best results during their periods. If these planets are positioned in opposite directions, they loose this strength. In other houses, the strength will be proportional.
Even the above angular houses happen to be the deep debilitations of the planets concerned, in several horoscopes, we can see that they give by and large good results, if they get directional strength.
With regard to other strengths a separate articles will be published in due course.
