LESSON 1-F
NAVAMSHA (Part I)
In the horoscope, Raasi chart is very important. In Vedic astrology, sages devised 16 different charts for giving accurate predictions. Among these charts, the second chart that is very important is Navamsha. The Raasi chart tells us the kind of incidents that occur in our life and vimsottari dasa table gives us when the incident takes place. In many charts, the planets give messages in an indirect manner and the Navamsha chart helps us to arrive at precise predictions. It is very important to learners and amateur astrologers to keep in mind the designing and mechanism of navamsha chart. Nava means 9. Each house is divided in 9 segments and each segment is named after nothing but zodiac signs. These segments spread over all the 12 houses in the zodiac wheel. We know each zodiac sign is divided into 30 degrees. When 30 degrees is divided by 9, we get 3 degrees 20 minutes. That means the span of each navamsha is 3 degrees 20 minutes. There are several methods to remember the design and mechanism of Navamsha chart. The simple method which will be useful to learners is given below. We know the names of all zodiac signs. Please refer lesson 1 A. However the names are repeated here once again to understand the mechanism clearly. Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karkataka, Simha, Thula, Vrischika, Dhanus, Makara, Kumbha and Meena. (Please refer lesson 1A for corresponding English names).
The very first navamsha in zodiac sign starts in Aeries (Mesha) sign with the same name. Aeries sign is divided into 9 segments and the names of these nine segments are in series same as the names of zodiac signs as shown below. The number in bracket indicates the number of navamsha.
(1) Mesha navamsha (2) Vrushabha navamsha (3) Mithuna navamsha (4) karkataka navamsha (5) Simha navamsha (6) Kanya navamsha (7) Thula navamsha (8) Vrischika navamsha (9) Dhanus and (10) Wait wait. Navamsha indicates only 9 segments. There is no possibility for 10th segment in Navamsha. What to do now? 10th segment finds place in the next zodiac sign. The names of 10th, 11th and 12th navamshas are Makara navamsha, Kumbha navamsha and Meena Navamsha respectively. These three navamshas find place in Vrishabha Raasi (Taurus). The names of 12 zodiac signs are covered now. What next? Again start from the first zodiac name i.e. Mesha. Now hope, it is clear. Out of 12 segments, 9 segments are adjusted in Aeries. Now come to Taurus. The first navamsha in Taurus is (1) Makara navamsha (2) Kumbha navamsha (3) Meena navamsha (4) Mesha navamsha (5) Vrishabha navamsha (6) Mithuna navamsha (7) Karkataka navamsha (8) Simha navamsha and (9) Kanya navamsha. There is no need for further explanation. Two zodiac signs are already covered. The third zodiac sign is Mithuna and the first Navamsha in Mithuna Raasi is Thula and the last navamsha is Mithuna. In Karkataka Raasi, the 1st navamsha starts with Karkataka navamsha and ends with Meena navamsha.

The next zodiac sign is Simha. Here please notice that one symmetry of navamshas are completed. When we take the first four signs in Zodiac wheel i.e. from Mesha Raasi to Karkataka Raasi, the very first Navamsha in Mesha is Mesha and the last Navamsha in Karkataka is Meena.

In the second symmetry i.e. in Simha raasi, Kanya raasi, Thula raasi and Vrischika raasi, the names of Navamshas will be same as in the first symmetry. In Simha raasi, the first navamsha is Mesha and the last navamsha is Dhanus. In Kanya raasi, the first navamsha is Makara and the last navamsha is Kanya. And in Thula and Vrischika raasis, the same pattern as in Mithuna and Karkataka Raasis continue.

The third symmetry starts from Dhanus Raasi and ends with Meena Raasi. The pattern of navamshas continue as above.

The magic of navamsha continues……
