LESSON 3-B
As stated in Lesson 3-A, after examining the longevity of the native of horoscope, the next important point to be examined is ascendant (Lagna). The ascendant is the most important sensitive point in the horoscope and with the help of the ascendant; we can foresee the incidents that may likely occur in the life of the individual. The zodiac sign which rises on eastern horizon at the time of birth of the child at the place on the globe is the ascendant of the child. To be more precise, the particular degree which rises on the horizon at the time of birth of the child, is the 1st cusp in the horoscope. The ascendant invariably rules the life of the person. Whatever predictions are made in astrology, they are based on the position of planets with reference to ascendant. Fixing of the ascendant is very important task in preparing the horoscope. Any mistake in the task leads to wrong predictions.
In general, influence of natural and functional benefic planets on the ascendant gives good longevity, good physique and other good qualities to the native. Position of Jupiter or Mercury in ascendant gives directional strength. Aspect or influence of Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and waxing moon is good for ascendant. At the same time, there should not be any malefic planetary influence on the ascendant. Such individuals have pleasing appearance and personality with good character.
We can also examine the constellation in which the 1st cusp falls and the position of the lord of that particular constellation to give predictions.
In respect of any ascendant, 5th and 9th lords give good results (with some exceptions) to that particular ascendant. 5th and 9th houses from the ascendant are called trines. It is very important to note that in respect of angular houses (kendras) i.e. 4th 7th and 10th houses, if the lord of those houses happen to be natural benefic planet, it gives bad results and if the lord happens to be natural malefic, it gives good results. This particular principle is called Kendradhipathya dosham in respect of natural benefics.
Lords of 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th houses, give more or less bad results with some exceptions. In cases, where the lord of ascendant happens to be the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th houses, the planet will not give bad result with respect to that bhava. With reference to 6, 8 and 12 houses, there is a principle called Vipareeta Raja Yoga, which bestows moderate to good results. This yoga operates only when the lords of 6th, 8th or 12th houses are positioned in any of these three houses.
In respect of ascendants falling in movable signs, lord of 11th house is called badhaka. In respect of fixed signs, lord of 9th house is badhaka and in respect of duel signs, 7th lord is badhaka. These planets give generally bad results.
Let us have a glance how the planets show influence for each ascendant.
Aeries (Mesha): The lord of the ascendant Mars, 5th lord Sun and 9th lord Jupiter give good results. Here it is pertinent to note a logical point. Jupiter is declared as benefic planet to Aeries ascendant. But the Jupiter also possess lordship over 12th house, which is malefic in nature. In such cases, practically, it is observed in several horoscopes, that whenever Jupiter is to give bad results to Aeries born ascendants, he is transferring his malefic powers to other planets which are either positioned in the constellations of Jupiter or signs or navamsa of Jupiter. This nature is being exhibited by all the planets. Similarly, one more aspect is to be kept in mind. For Aeries born ascendants, Mars is not only the lord of ascendant, but also lord of 8th house. He cannot do harm to his own ascendant or bhava as the case may be. Hence, this is an exception in this case. The 2nd and 7th lord to Aeries is Venus and according to the principles of killing planets, Venus is very powerful killing planet for Aeries. The lord of 3rd and 6th houses is Mercury and obviously, he gives bad results to Aeries. The lord of 4th house (angular house) is Moon and if Moon happens to be waxing moon, which is benefic may give bad results to Aeries and if moon happens to be waning moon, he gives good results. Then comes lord of 10th and 11th houses, Saturn. On one hand, as a lord of 10th house (angular) he should give good result on the other hand, as a lord of 11th house, i.e., badhaka, he should give bad result. We can conclude that basing on the other circumstances, he gives mixed results as the case may.
Taurus (Vrishabha): The lord of ascendant Venus, lords of 5th and 9th houses, Mercury and Saturn respectively give good results to Taurus ascendants. It is pertinent to note here, how Saturn give good result to Taurus ascendant. It is a fact that the Saturn is lord of 9th house, which is badhaka position for fixed ascendant. However, as a lord of 10th house, which is an angular house, he should give good results. Whenever a planet is supposed to give good and bad results, the bad results are transferred to some other planets which are positioned in its constellations or signs or navamsas. Sometimes it gives mixed results. Mercury who also possesses lordship over 2nd house, Gemini, is not a direct killing planet to Taurus ascendants. The 7th and 12th lord, Mars takes the responsibility of killing Taurus ascendants. 3rd lord Moon either waning or waxing will not help Taurus ascendants except when exalted in Taurus ascendant. Sun as a lord of 4th house do help to Taurus. 6th lord as well as lord of ascendant Venus cannot show any evil effect on his own ascendant. Lord of 8th and 11th houses, Jupiter will give mixed results only.
Gemini (Mithuna): The lord of ascendant Mercury, lords of 5th and 9th houses, Venus and Saturn give good results, however being the lord of 8th house, Saturn transfers his malefic powers to other planets as mentioned above. Similarly, lord of 12th house, Venus also transfers his malefic powers to other planets. Lord of 2nd house, Moon is a killing planet for Gemini. Sun as a lord of 3rd house give bad results. Lord of 4th house also being lord of ascendant give good results. Lord of 6th and 11th houses, Mars gives more or less bad results to Gemini. Lord of 7th and 10th houses, Jupiter being natural benefic planet, by getting lordships of 7th and 10th angular houses, it give very bad results to Gemini. It is badhaka and powerful killing planet as well.
Cancer (Karkataka): The lord of ascendant, Moon gives only good results. Lord of 2nd house, Sun being a friend to Moon, also give good results. He will not take responsibility of killing the individual, even though having lordship over 2nd house. Lord of 3rd and 12th Mercury is the most functional malefic to Cancer ascendants. He can also kill the individual without any hesitation. Lord of 4th and 11th houses Venus cannot give good results to Cancer because, being natural benefic planet getting lordship over angular house (4th) cannot give good results. Besides that for movable ascendants, lord of 11th house is badhaka. Hence, Venus cannot give good results to Cancer. Lord of 5th and 10th houses, Mars give best results to Cancer. In fact it is the best planet which bestows Rajayoga to Cancer ascendants. It gives bad results only when it is deeply debilitated in ascendant. Jupiter as a lord of 9th houses generally give good result by transferring bad results of 6th house to another planet on the principles already discussed above. Saturn as a lord of 7th and 8th houses, is a very powerful killing planet to Cancer ascendants. However, as a lord of angular house i.e. 7th, occasionally give good results more particularly when exalted in Libra (angular house). On the other hand, he can also take the responsibility of killing planet.
Leo (Simha): Lord of ascendant Sun, lords of 5th and 9th houses, Jupiter and Mars respectively give good results to Leo. Mercury as a lord of 2nd and 11th houses, give moderate results. However, when Mercury is in conjunction either in the ascendant, or in Aeries (9th house) or Virgo (2nd house) or in Gemini (11th house) it forms Budhaditya yoga and gives good to best results. On some occasions, Mercury may however take the responsibility of killing planet as a lord of 2nd house, when afflicted by malefics. Venus as a lord of 3rd and 10th houses, cannot give good results. Mars as a lord of 4th house give good results. As a lord of 6th and 7th houses, Saturn give only moderate to bad results. Very rarely, when positioned in Aquarius (moolatrikona), he may give good results for some time. As a lord of 8th house, Jupiter transfers his bad results to some other planets according to the principles discussed above.
Virgo (Kanya): As a lord of ascendant and 10th house, Mercury will give good results. As lords of 5th and 9th, Saturn and Venus give best results to Virgo. Venus also being lord of 2nd house, however is not a direct killing planet to Virgo. Mars as a lord of 3rd and 8th houses give bad results. However, when positioned in Aeries i.e. 8th house, he may give moderate to good results according to the principle of Vipareetha Raja yoga discussed above. He can also become killing planet by possessing lordship over 3rd and 8th houses. Jupiter as a lord of 4th and 7th houses give very bad results to Virgo according to principle of kendradhipathya dosham mentioned in above paragraphs. He is not only badhaka, but also powerful killing planet. Saturn as a lord of 5th and 6th houses give good results only and however, transfer malefic results of 6th house to some other planets according to principles mentioned in preceding paragraphs. As a lord of 11th house, Moon give by and large moderate results. As a lord of 12th house, Sun gives only moderate results with an exception in case of Budhaditya yoga and vipareeta rajayoga.
Libra (Thula): Lord of ascendant and also 8th house Venus, Lord of 5th house Saturn and lord of 9th house, Mercury give good results to Libra. Mercury as a lord of 12th house, however transfers evil effects to other planets positioned in his sign or navamsa or constellation. Saturn gives Raja yoga to Libra ascendants. He is also 4th lord being natural malefic, he gives good results for 4th (angular house). Lord of 2nd and 7th houses Mars is powerful killing planet to Libra. Lord of 3rd and 6th houses Jupiter gives bad results. Moon as a lord of 10th house give good result, if it is waning (malefic) and bad results if it is waxing (benefic). Sun as a lord of 11th house acts as badhaka and give bad results.
Scorpio (Vrischika): Lord of ascendant and also 6th house Mars, 5th lord Jupiter and 9th lord Moon give good results. It is to remember that though Moon is badhaka for scorpio (fixed ascendant), he transfers negative powers to some other planet. 2nd lord Jupiter is not a direct killing planet. Saturn as a lord of 3rd and 4th houses give mixed results. If positioned in 4th house, which is moolatrikona to Saturn, may give good results for some time. Lord of 7th and 12th Venus is powerful killing planet to Scorpions. Mercury as a lord of 8th and 11th houses give moderate to bad results. Sun as a lord of 10th house (being natural malefic) give good results.
Sagittarius (Dhanus): Lord of ascendant and 4th house Jupiter, 5th lord Mars and 9th lord Sun give good results. Lord of 2nd and 3rd Saturn is a killing planet to Sagittarius. Lord of 6th and 11th Venus gives only bad results. Mercury as a lord of 7th and 10th give very bad results as a badhaka (lord of 7th house for duel signs) and with reference to 10th house, Kendradhipathya dosha operates. Mercury is also powerful killing planet to Sagittarius. Moon as a lord of 8th house though cannot give bad results directly, it transfers the same to other planets positioned in its constellations, signs or navamsa. Lord of 12th house, Mars will not directly give bad results.
Capricorn (Makara): Lord of ascendant and 2nd house Saturn, 5th and 9th lords Venus and Mercury respectively give good results. There is a principle in astrology that Venus give Rajayoga to Capricorns. Though as a lord of 10th house Venus is supposed to give bad results (Kendradhipathya dosha), he will not do so because of his friendship with lord of ascendant, Saturn and the same will be transferred to other planets positioned in its sign, navamsa or constellations. As a lord of 3rd and 12th, Jupiter is killing planet for Capricorns. Mars as a lord of 4th and 11th (as badhaka) give moderate to bad results. Mercury as a lord of 6th house transfers its malefic results to some other planet positioned in its sign or constellation or navamsa. Moon as a lord of 7th house acts as a killing planet to Capricorn more particularly if it is waning in the natal chart. Sun as a lord of 8th house cannot give good results.
Aquarius (Kumbha): Lord of ascendant and 12th house Saturn, lord of 5th house, Mercury give good results. But when it comes to 9th lord Venus, there is a peculiarity here. Venus is not only lord of 9th (badhaka for fixed ascendants), but also 4th having kendradhipathya dosha for natural benefics. This malefic nature operates here and Venus cannot give good results as both the lordships are harmful. 2nd and 11th lord Jupiter is a killing planet. Mars as a lord of 3rd and 10th give moderate results. Lord of 6th house Moon give bad results. Lord of 7th house Sun give moderate to good results as a lord of angular house. But this will not prevent him to act as killing planet. Mercury as a lord of 8th house will not directly affect but transfers its malefic powers to other planets positioned in its sign, navamsa or constellation.
Pisces (Meena): Lord of ascendant and 10th Jupiter, lord of 5th house Moon and lord of 9th house Mars give good results. Mars though the lord of 2nd house is not a direct killing planet. Venus as a lord of 3rd and 8th house give bad results and also act as killing planet. Mercury as a lord of 4th and 7th house is a powerful killing planet for Pisces. Lord of 6th house Sun will not give bad results directly but transfers to other planets positioned in his sign, navamsa or constellation. Saturn as a lord of 11th and 12th houses give moderate to bad results.
While giving predictions, we cannot merely depend on the above said combinations and a further thorough study is required. Among innumerable combinations in the horoscope, we have to take into consideration several other points also.
Please remember that in all the above cases, even though the planets are functional malefics, if positioned either in exalted houses or moolatrikonas, they bestow good to best results during their vimshottari periods. And also even functional benefics, if positioned in debilitation or inimical houses, they give bad results during their vimshottari periods. A glance at the article Pancha Maha Purusha Yogas may clear some of the doubts of readers, how inimical planets also render Pancha Maha Purusha Yogas for several ascendants. Readers may also go through the said article. An example is given in the following paragraphs.
It is also to be remembered that in the previous articles, it was narrated that the 9 planets can be formed into two groups and in first group, we have Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Ketu and in 2nd group, we have Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Rahu. This point has to be considered while giving predictions.
According to Krishna Murthy system, how a planet can give good or bad results is once again narrated below.
i) A planet positioned in the star of the planet located in that particular house.
ii) A planet located in that particular house
iii) A planet positioned in star of lord of that particular house
iv) Lord of that particular house.
v) A planet in conjunction with that particular planet or influenced by that particular planet.
Let us see an example to understand the above principle briefly.
A person is born in Capricorn ascendant and Jupiter is positioned in Cancer in deep exaltation. For Capricorns we know that Jupiter is a powerful killing planet. But in this particular case, Hamsa Maha Purusha Yoga operates and Jupiter will not kill the individual during its vimsottari dasa or antardasa. Instead, it transfers its killing powers to any of the planets positioned in its constellations namely, Punarvasu or Visakha or Poorvabhadra. To be more precise we can examine further. If any planets are positioned in the above constellations, the planet positioned in Poorvabhadra will act more powerfully as a killing planet. The reason is obvious that any planet positioned in Poorvabhadra constellation will be located either in 2nd house (aquarius) or 3rd house (pisces). When we take sign and constellation, we have to give more importance to the constellation and then the house. If there is no planet in any constellations of Jupiter, then the constellations of lord of 7th house Moon operates and any planet positioned either in Rohini, Hasta or Sravana may kill the individual during their antardasas or mahadasas. If any of the above combinations (i) to (v) are not found in the horoscope, then we can understand that the individual’s destiny is fixed to be killed by the Jupiter and it becomes unavoidable and of course, being positioned in deep exaltation and rendering Hamsa Maha Purusha Yoga, the individual dies with a very high honor and maha yoga operates even at the time of his funeral.
With regard to intervening periods of Saturn and Venus i.e. sub period of Saturn in main period of Venus or vice versa, in a very large number of cases, malefic results are found. Readers may also check up by examining the horoscopes of their relatives and friends.
Further series of lessons on other bhavas i.e. 2nd to 12th will be published from time to time.
