LESSON 1-B
BASICS OF ASTROLOGY
DISTRIBUTION OF STARS IN ZODIAC WHEEL
The zodiac wheel is based on sexagesimal system (divisible by 6). How the 27 stars are symmetrically adjusted in the zodiac wheel of 360 degrees is explained below.
In Vedic system, each star is spread over a span of 13 degrees 20 minutes. Thus 27 stars are adjusted in the zodiac wheel. Again each star is divided into 4 quarters, each with a span of 3 degrees 20 minutes. Each zodiac sign is spread over a span of 30 degrees. In such division, each zodiac sign contains 9 divisions of stars as shown below.
Aeries – Mesha Raasi – Aswini 4 quarters, Bharani 4 quarters and Krittika 1 quarter
Taurus – Vrishabha Raasi – Krittika 3 quarters Rohini 4 quarters Mrigasira 2 quarters
Gemini – Mithuna Raasi – Mrigasira 2 quarters Arudra 4 quarters Punarvasu 3 quarters
Cancer – Karkataka Raasi – Punarvasu 1 quarter Pushyami 4 quarters Aslesha 4 quarters
Leo – Simha Raasi – Makha 4 quarters Pubba 4 quarters Uttara 1 quarter
Virgo – Kanya Raasi – Uttara 3 quarters Hasta 4 quarters Chitta 2 quarters
Libra – Thula Raasi – Chitta 2 quarters Swathi 4 quarters Visakha 3 quarters
Scorpio – Vrischika Raasi – Visakha 1 quarter Anuradha 4 quarters Jyeshta 4 quarters
Sagittarius – Dhanush Raasi – Moola 4 quarters Poorvashada 4 quarters Uttarashada 1 quarter
Capricorn – Makara Raasi – Uttarashada 3 quarters Sravanam 4 quarters Dhanishta 2 quarters
Aquarius–Kumbha Raasi–Dhanishta 2 quarters Satabhisham 4 quarters Poorvabhadra 3 quarters
Pisces – Meena Raasi – Poorvabhadra 1 quarter Uttarabhadra 4 quarters Revathi 4 quarters
A glance at the above classification shows that the 12 signs of zodiac wheel is divided symmetrically into three quarters. The 1st Aeries to Cancer, the 2nd Leo to Scorpio and the 3rd Sagittarius to Pisces. The similar pattern of stars continues in the three quarters.
