LESSON 2 A
PANCHA MAHA PURUSHA YOGAS
Yoga. In today’s world, this word became most popular and it is used in the sense of performing various physical postures and breathing exercises for keeping good health. But in astrology, yoga means combination. Combination of Planets. Two or more planets should be in same house or angular houses to each other or particular planet should be positioned either in ascendant or in angular house to ascendant. In olden texts, about 1800 such yogas were mentioned under the caption Nabhasa Yogas. These yogas can bestow moderate to best results during their periods. There are, of course, some bad yogas, which obviously give bad results.
The top order yogas are called Pancha Maha Purusha Yogas and are separated from the above Nabhasa yogas. These yogas are bestowed by five starry planets namely, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. The basis for these yogas is they should be placed in angular houses to the ascendant i.e. 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th and also the said angular house, where the planet is positioned should be its exalted house or Moolatrikona. If the planet is positioned in own house, which may not be Moolatrikona, the planet bestows only good results but they cannot be equated to Pancha Maha Purusha Yogas. Some times, the planet will be lagging behind certain degrees to the ascendant, which is called vyaya bhava from the outlook of Placidus theory of house division. In such cases also, these yogas may not yield the desired results. Let us see how these yogas are formed in the horoscopes. A question arises, whether these yogas occur in trines also i.e. if planets are positioned in 5th and 9th houses from the ascendant. It can be noticed that these yogas are diluted in trines and also when the said planet is in retrogression in natal chart in that particular angular house. A very few exceptions can be quoted, where best results are bestowed in such cases. In respect of some planets, exalted house is different from Moolatrikona. (please refer lesson 1G). In such case, the top rank goes to exalted house and Moolatrikona remains 2nd in order.
RUCHAKA MAHA PURUSHA YOGA
Maha Purusha Yoga bestowed by Mars is called Ruchaka Maha Purusha Yoga(RMPY).
This yoga occurs for those who are born in Aeries, Libra, Cancer and Capricorn ascendants. For Aeries born ascendants, when Mars is positioned either in Aeries (Ascendant & Moolatrikona) or Capricorn (10th house i.e. exalted house) this yoga operates. For Cancer born ascendants, Mars should be positioned either in Capricorn (4th house) or Aeries (10th house). For Libra born ascendants, Mars should be positioned either in Aeries (7th house) or Capricorn (4th house). For Capricorn born ascendants, Mars should be positioned either in ascendant or in Aeries (4th house). This yoga occurs only in movable ascendants.
In this context, a doubt arises whether this yoga operates for Taurus ascendants or Scorpio ascendants if Mars is positioned in Scorpio, because for Taurus, Scorpio is 7th house and for Scorpions, it is 1st house. In these two combinations, Mars can give good results but they cannot be equated to that of RMPY, because Scorpio is only own house for Mars, but not Moolatrikona. When Mars is positioned in the above combinations, no malefic or inimical planet should be in conjunction with Mars. Conjunction in the sense, in the same house or opposition or through aspect. For example, if Mars is positioned in Capricorn ascendant along with Saturn, or Saturn is aspecting Mars from Scorpio, Ruchaka Maha Purusha Yoga may get spoiled. This rule is equally applicable for all PMPYs narrated hereunder.
BHADRA MAHA PURUSHA YOGA
Maha Purusha Yoga bestowed by Mercury is called Bhadra Maha Purusha Yoga (BMPY).
This yoga occurs for those who are born in Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces and Gemini. For Virgo born ascendants, when Mercury is positioned in Virgo (Ascendant, Exalted and Moolatrikona as well) this yoga operates. For Sagittarius born ascendants, Mercury should be positioned in Virgo (10th house). For Pisces born ascendants, Mercury should be positioned in 7th house. For Gemini born ascendants, Mercury should be positioned in 4th house. Unlike in RMPY, in all these 4 combinations, Mercury’s position in Virgo is compulsory, because, his exalted house as well as Moolatrikona remains same. The position of Mercury in Gemini doesn’t bestow this yoga. It can be noticed that this yoga occurs only in duel signs.

HAMSA MAHA PURUSHA YOGA
Maha Purusha Yoga bestowed by Jupiter is called Hamsa Maha Purusha Yoga (HMPY).
This yoga occurs for those who are born in Aeries, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Pisces ascendants. For Aeries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn born ascendants, Jupiter should be positioned in Cancer (Exalted house) as Cancer is angular house for all these ascendants. For Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants, Jupiter should be positioned in Sagittarius (Moolatrikona). It can be noticed that this yoga occurs in ascendants falling in movable and duel signs.
MALAVYA MAHA PURUSHA YOGA
Maha Purusha Yoga bestowed by Venus is called Malavya Maha Purusha Yoga (MMPY).
This yoga occurs for those who are born in Aeries, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Pisces. For Aeries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn born ascendants, Venus should be positioned in Libra (Moolatrikona) as Libra is angular house for all these ascendants. For Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants, Venus should be positioned in Pisces (Exalted house). This yoga occurs in ascendants falling in movable and duel signs.
SASAKA MAHA PURUSHA YOGA
Maha Purusha Yoga bestowed by Saturn is called Sasaka Maha Purusha Yoga (SMPY).
This yoga occurs for those who are born in Aeries, Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius. For Aeries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn born ascendants, Saturn should be positioned in Libra (Exalted house) as Libra is angular house for all these ascendants. For Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius ascendants, Saturn should be positioned in Aquarius (Moolatrikona). This yoga occurs in ascendants falling in movable and fixed signs.
The general results in respect of these yogas are the natives reach higher positions in their career/profession/business/politics as the case may be. They earn good name and fame, become rich and respected by a large sect of people in the Society.
Some times, in a horoscope, two or more PMPYs may occur. These yogas will be useful when they are operated in the age group of 20-60. In some cases, they may occur in child hood, which generally give best results by and large to the parents of the child and the child derive the benefits from the parents. In a few cases, before these yogas are operated, the native may die and the yoga remains nullified.
